A live action role-playing game (LARP) is a form of role-playing game where the participants physically portray their characters. The players pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by the real world while interacting with each other in character. The outcome of player actions may be mediated by game rules or determined by consensus among players.

 

It is our goal to raise the bar for live action role playing in both the region and for the hobby, nationally. And while this may seem like a lofty goal, we have know we have the right staff, and more importantly, the right community behind us to make it happen.

We want to offer an experience to our community the experience that we’ve always wanted; a live action role playing experience that is highly immersive, of a high level of production in both costuming and props, a set of rules systems that are easy to understand, and most importantly, a safe player community that encourages mutual respect and a culture of trust.

The World of Eldritch

The Experience

Eldritch is a low fantasy, grimdark, medieval world of kings and queens, lords and ladies, knights and villains, old institutions and orders, and a little bit of strange and wonderful magic that seems to be lurking just around every corner.

Events take place in western Washington state near Seattle every 3 – 4 months, ensuring that we have plenty of time to create events that will surprise and delight, be engaging, and offer our players a singularly unique experience. The campaign will take place over a three year arc that will tell a grand story. Over the course of this arc, players will be brought into the fold at every level of the plot, their personal decisions and those they make as a group directly affecting every event that follows. Eldritch can be referred to what is known as a “secrets” live role playing experience. A common paradigm of a secrets game form is that not all information is made available to every player. This is to ensure that as we progress in the campaign, player members of our community will consistently experience the thrill and excitement of discovering secrets they can use to interact with the game world and advance their story and the story of Eldritch.

The Campaign

Events are set in the Annwyn, a mysterious land in the western part of the kingdom that has seemingly appeared from out of nowhere. Players have set out upon an expedition to settle this new land, uncovering its many secrets and unraveling its mysteries. The inhabitants of this strange land struggle to establish a foothold amidst old conflicts and new alliances. Ancient institutions and dynasties, old and noble, seek to use this discovery to tip the scales of power in their favor. And yet, something stirs, old and insidious from beyond the veil of this world, seeping in like droplets of water from behind a rotten and creaking dam. And when comes the flood, what of the schemes and many machinations of man? Who will stay afloat upon the ebb and flow of the tide and who will find themselves drowning, chained to weights of their own making?

Eldritch will run for three years, over which time players may enter play at any period, with roughly the same amount of mechanical benefit as existing players. Over the course of four events per year, Team Eldritch will tell a grand story, ultimately leading to the climactic event at the end of 2021. The overall campaign can be compared to any beginner level table-top campaign. Characters will begin their story in relative obscurity, inexperienced as to the ways of the greater kingdom at large. As the campaign progresses and the story unfolds, characters will be presented with both physical and emotional challenges, serving to further the plot of Eldritch and the story of each and every character.

Creating a Character

The process for creating a character at Eldritch has been designed to be as easy as possible. Please follow the steps detailed below to do so and if you have any questions please drop us a line via the form on our Contact page. We look forward to seeing you at a future Eldritch event.

Create an Account

You will need a user account to access different parts of the website and event information. Eldritch is a game for players and participants 21 years and older.

Grab a Ticket

Ticket purchasing windows are open for one month after an event. New player tickets will be made available two weeks after the previous event and are limited per the number of returning players. The number of tickets to each event are capped based on the number of staff available to run each event.

Sign a Waiver

Signing a waiver also entails that you have read our Code of Conduct and Social Contract. These policies outline the conduct expectations for Eldritch and are the most important facet of our community of players and volunteers.

Engage with the Setting

The kingdom of Arnesse and the campaign's setting of the Annwyn ("A-noon") are fully realized worlds we have created to provide a rich and compelling backdrop against which to play out your character's journey. Click below to access brief descriptions of each region, or Protectorate, of the kingdom. These are all places from which your character may originate as they begin their expedition to the newly settled Annwyn. The brief descriptions provide a mere glimpse into the myriad, unique personalities and cultural idiosyncrasies of each protectorate.

Read the Rules

Eldritch employs a rules system that we feel is simple to understand, enables lots of fun interaction and role-play within the world, and offers enough versatility to custom tailor your character within the context of the setting. Though we have put lots of work and thought into our rules and systems, it is important to note that we have designed the rules to inform your character creation process and not define it.

Character Background

All characters begin play as Generalists. That is they are a non-gentry, non-profession person from one of the protectorates. However, the current distribution of character types may dictate that we open up additional Gentry or Profession slots. Professions open up additional skills and abilities outside of those listed in the Player's Guide while Gentry positions allow you to access a higher social caste and grant their own unique benefits. When this is the case we will list them here such that if you are interested, you may provide us with your concept that corresponds to one of the available roles. We will then contact you should your submission be chosen. Available roles may be found in the corresponding section below. We have provided a template with which to complete your character's background in the player's guide. It may also be found in the main menu once you have created an account for the site. Your character's background is pivotal to both your enjoyment of the setting as a player and for Eldritch staff to utilize as a vehicle for both plot and general entertainment. Thus, it is very important that you take the time to complete it to the best of your ability. Once you have done so click the button below to navigate to the background submission form. Once you submit your background, our character guides will be in touch with you to address any issues with your submission or ultimately approve your character for play. Backgrounds are due no later than one month before the following event.

Choose Your Skills

After reading through the player's guide you should have a sense of some of the skills and abilities you would like to choose based on how you have written your character background. Starting characters are given an amount of points to spend on their character skills called Character Points. The amount of character points added to your account will depend on the event in which you start playing. All Eldritch characters start with an amount of Character Points based on the number of Character Points existing characters have such that your character will be on roughly the same playing field as existing characters. Once you have chosen which skills to purchase, head over to the character creator portal and build your character. You will need to make a new account here as well. Note that you will not have any character points assigned to your account until you have an approved character background. Your character will then be reviewed by our staff. If there are any questions or comments we will reach out to you directly. If not, it will be approved and you will receive a print-out as part of your player packet when checking in at the event.

Create Your Costume

Start by consulting the player's guide for costuming criteria. No modern clothing will be accepted as part of your character's costume, i.e. t-shirts, jeans, beanies, uncovered tennis shoes, etc... If you have any questions about what is acceptable, we encourage you to contact us or search our Reddit for many questions that have likely already been addressed. To help you in defining the aesthetic for Eldritch, we have provided Pinterest boards as part of each Protectorate page. Eldritch LARP Participant Agreement including Express Assumption of Risks, Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, and Indemnity Agreement

Express Assumptions of Risks

I do hereby affirm that I have been fully informed of the hazards and risks associated with the recreational activity generally described as Eldritch LARP (Eldritch Workshop, L.L.C.), including the use of equipment associated therewith in which I am about to engage. Inherent hazards and risks include, but are not limited to:

  1. Risk of injury from the activity and equipment is significant.
  2. Possible equipment failure and/or malfunction of my own or others’ equipment.
  3. This activity takes place outdoors and therefore includes risks associated with exposure to elements, excessive heat, hypothermia, encountering objects either natural or manmade, exposure to animals with the attendant risk of kicking, biting, shying away, running off, or otherwise moving in an unanticipated manner causing injury.
  4. Attack by or encounter with insects, reptiles, and/or animals.
  5. Accidents or illness occurring in remote places where there are no available medical facilities.
  6. Fatigue, chill, and/or dizziness, which may diminish my/our reaction time and increase the risk of accident.

I understand the aforementioned description of these risks is not complete and unknown or unanticipated risks may result in injury or illness.

Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims and Indemnity Agreement

In consideration for being permitted to participate in the activity(ies) described above and related activities, I hereby agree and acknowledge and appreciate that:

  1. I understand the nature of the activities I will engage in as described above. I understand there are risks of injury associated with these activities. I acknowledge and voluntarily assume the risks of illness and injury associated with these activities, inherent and otherwise, and whether or not described above, including those which may result from the negligent acts or omissions of other participants or staff.
  2. I am age 21 or older.
  3. I HEREBY RELEASE, INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS WITH RESPECT TO ANY AND ALL INJURY, or loss or damage to person or property, WHETHER CAUSED BY NEGLIGENCE OR OTHERWISE, Eldritch LARP, Eldritch Workshop, L.L.C., officers, directors, agents, representatives, employees and volunteers and the owner or owners of the property on which the activity is conducted (the Released Parties) from, and agree to not sue them for, any liability for causes of action that I, my estate, heirs, survivors, executors, or assigns may have for personal injury or property damage arising from the above activities whether caused by active or passive negligence of the Released Parties or otherwise, claims and demands of any kind and nature whatsoever that may arise out of or relate in any way to my enrollment or participation in the Eldritch LARP’s (the “Provider’s”) programs. The claims hereby released and indemnified include, but are not limited to claims of other participants and of members of Participant’s family or associates and claims of negligence of a released party, but not the claims of gross negligence or willful injury.
  4. I accept responsibility for any expenses that may be incurred for any illness or injury that may result from my enrollment or participation in the Provider’s programs, including the costs of evacuation, hospitalization, and medical treatment and any sums payable to anyone by reason of any injury that I may sustain through my participation in the Provider’s programs.
  5. I am physically able to safely participate in Eldritch LARP. My participation in this activity is purely voluntary, no one is forcing me to participate, and I have elected to participate in spite of the risks. I am not currently under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or impairing legal drugs.
  6. By entering into this Agreement, I am not relying on any oral or written representation or statements made by the Released Parties, other than what is set forth in this Agreement.

I understand that Eldritch LARP may refuse participation in its activities to any person that its owners, agents, or employees deem a hazard to themselves or others. Eldritch LARP may alter its published or announced requirements for participation in its activities and for use of its property at any time and for any reasons that it may deem appropriate.

Eldritch  LARP reserves the right to use voice, video, photographic, or other images of Participant(s) for future marketing, educational, or other purpose, and Participant (and Parent) hereby consent to such use, without compensation.

I agree the laws of the State of Washington govern this agreement and that the courts with jurisdiction in Washington shall have jurisdiction in my dispute that may arise between Participant and Eldritch LARP.

I have read, fully understand, and hereby agree to the terms of this agreement, voluntarily and with knowledge of the activities and their risks as well as the Eldritch Code of Conduct. I acknowledge that this agreement shall be effective and binding upon me, my heirs, assigns, personal representatives, and estates. This release shall be binding to the fullest extent permitted by law. If any provision of this release is found to be unenforceable, the remaining terms shall be enforceable.

I HAVE READ THIS RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK AGREEMENT, AND I FULLY UNDERSTAND ITS TERMS, AND UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE GIVEN UP LEGAL RIGHTS BY SIGNING IT, AND I SIGN IT FREELY AND VOLUNTARILY WITHOUT ANY INDUCEMENT.

Naming conventions in Eldritch should follow a low fantasy convention. Only nobility will have a last name.
Which part of the world do they come from? If it is not a named part of the world map, feel free to make up your own city or town, and tell us a little bit about it so we can add it to the map and canon of the world. Be sure to read over the content that pertains to this part of the world and adhere to the low fantasy setting of the world.
What are the people there like? What did your character do there?
Names of parents, brothers, and sisters, or anyone they were close with are helpful. Who were they raised by?
Be sure to include the good and the bad here. Were they beset by some tragedy? Did they live a spoiled upbringing? Were they privy to some sort of trauma?
Who taught them to do what they know how to do? Or, why did they choose to study what they did? Was it forced upon them?
Be sure to list any little stories here about things they have done to help others.
No one in this world is perfect, and though we try we all come up short in some way to a lesser or greater degree. Has your character cheated, murdered, or stolen? Does lying come all too easily to them? Tell us about the bad things your character has done.
What are these ties, and how did they establish them?
If so, how? What is the nature of this relationship?
Anything goes here. These will help us to get an idea of who your character is at a deeper level.
This can be good friends or people that would come to their aid in a crisis. How did they come to be so? What are the names and backgrounds of your allies?
Who are they and how did they come to be so? What are the names and backgrounds of your enemies?
Are they seedy or corrupt? Do they have some hidden vice? Do they always try to do the right thing, even to a fault? Is there a code they try to live by?
